What happens when too many people can use the same resource? It gets overused, worn out, and nobody wants to invest in it. What happens when too many people can say “no” to using it? Nothing gets done at all. This chapter explores both extremes—the tragedy of the commons and the tragedy of the anticommons—and shows how different forms of ownership, from private property to corporations, try to solve these problems.
