Observational Methods for Causal Discovery

We often need to understand cause and effect, but we cannot always run an experiment. We cannot randomly assign countries to have different political systems, nor can we force a financial crisis just to watch what happens next. This chapter is about the observational toolkit—methods that try to find causal relations from data that were not produced by a carefully controlled experiment.
