Over the last few decades, the world of work has been transformed by two enormous forces: the steady advance of technology and the growing connections between economies across borders. These shifts have created new opportunities and lifted many out of poverty, but they have also left some workers behind and reshaped the very nature of a “job.” This chapter explains how these changes happen, why they matter for wages and inequality, and what the future might hold.
