You have already seen how a claimant must prove that the defendant owed them a duty of care and then broke that duty. But that is only half the story. Even if someone was careless, they will not have to pay compensation unless that carelessness actually caused the harm, and they may have a defence that reduces or wipes out their liability. This chapter is about those two important links: causation and defences.
