Why do some students in city schools do really well while others fall behind? And why are some neighbourhoods so much safer than others? These are two of the toughest problems in urban policy. In this chapter, we use economic thinking to unpack both puzzles. We’ll look at what drives student success and what makes people choose crime — or stay away from it — and we’ll dig into the evidence on policies that actually change lives.
